At Duke’s Department of Radiation Oncology, our nurses are specialized to provide superior care to patients receiving radiation treatment. We practice primary nursing, which means that we work closely with both the patient and the entire radiation oncology team (physicians, therapists, and resource specialists) to ensure that the treatment process is positive. At your first consultation visit, you will meet your nurse and will see her weekly throughout your course of treatment.
Our nurses average 26 years of experience, and most are Oncology Certified Nurses (OCN). To achieve their OCN, registered nurses complete specialized training and education in the care of cancer patients and then must pass rigorous board examinations. Maintaining the OCN requires continuing medical education in the newest and best practices for the treatment of cancer patients.
In their commitment to improving the practice of oncology patient care, our nurses have earned the respect and admiration of staff and patients who have nominated them for many special awards. Five of our nurses have received Duke Friends of Nursing Awards, and in 2008, a Duke Radiation Oncology nurse was named one of the Great 100 Nurses in North Carolina. Our nurses are also active in professional organizations at both the local and national level. They have presented research papers at conferences of national organizations, such as the Oncology Nursing Society and the American Society of Radiation Therapy and Oncology. Our nurses have published articles in scientific journals and chapters in medical textbooks. The professionalism of the nurses in the Department of Radiation Oncology extends well beyond Duke University Health Systems.
