Services offered by the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center

Oncology Social Work

Oncology social workers help patients and their loved ones cope with the emotional and practical concerns that accompany the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Individual, family and group consultations are available to both inpatients and outpatients.

Oncology Recreational Therapy

At Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, Oncology Recreational Therapy matches the best medical care available with music, games, arts and crafts, and laughter. It puts patients in a better frame of mind to be treated - and helps them combat fear, fatigue, nausea, and sleeplessness. The program uses activities to help patients and their families enjoy and employ their own creativity, humor, and intelligence in their personal fight against cancer. All services of the program are free. The Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center has been a pioneer in recreation therapy since 1976. ORT is a key component in the Cancer Center's approach to total patient care. The program's staff gets at least 100 letters a year from medical institutions and caregivers nationwide wanting to know about the program.
