Congratulations to Gustavo S. Montana Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Radiation Oncology Mark Dewhirst, DVM, PhD, who was named the 2025 recipient of the 50 Year Club Career Achievement Award at Colorado State University.
Each year, the Colorado State University Alumni Association and 50 Year Club Committee recognize two alumni who graduated at least 50 years ago for career achievement and public service.
The Career Achievement Award identifies and recognizes an alum who is recognized as outstanding in their profession and who has brought honor to Colorado State University and to themselves.
Dr. Dewhirst earned his DVM in 1975 and his PhD in environmental and radiological sciences in 1979, both from Colorado State University, and was recruited to Duke in 1984 from the University of Arizona. His specific research interests included tumor hypoxia, angiogenesis, drug transport in cancer and hyperthermia to enhance radiation and chemotherapy sensitivity. He credits his success to his many partnerships and collaborations across academia, noting most prominently "the most precious gift" of his students, whom he sees as paying it forward as the next outstanding generation of researchers.
