Resident ASTRO Awards

Leng awarded ASTRO-ARRO Global Health Scholar Grant

Congratulations to resident Jim Leng, MD, who has been awarded an ASTRO-ARRO (Association of Residents in Radiation Oncology) Global Health Scholar Grant. Three grants were given this year to proposals with the potential to benefit the local community; elicit involvement and support of local stakeholders; establish sustainable future collaboration; and contribute to the field of global oncology.

Dr. Leng's interest in global health was shaped by his time at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, where he conducted research in Ibadan and Lagos, Nigeria on radiation access and breast cancer with mentor Funmi Olopade, MD.

As an ASTRO-ARRO Global Health Scholar, Dr. Leng will be working to increase access to pediatric radiation oncology and examine the outcomes of brachytherapy in Tanzania.

Karukonda wins ASTRO abstract award

Congratulations to Pooja Karukonda, MD, who is one of the recipients of an ASTRO annual meeting abstract award (travel award, clinical category) for the abstract "Pembrolizumab, Radiotherapy, and Chemotherapy in Neoadjuvant Treatment of Malignant Esophago-gastric Diseases (PROCEED): Assessment of Pathologic Response in a Prospective, Phase II Single-Arm Trial."

Each year, ASTRO awards investigators who submitted an abstract to the annual meeting with an achievement award. Winners are chosen by the Annual Meeting Steering Committee based on the abstracts' peer-reviewed scores. This year, only 30 winners were selected out of over 2,000 abstract submissions.
